DIY Air Freshener

DIY Air Freshener

It’s the first week of August and I am already in the mood for fall. I can’t make it colder outside so I can wear sweaters, boots and scarves. I can’t make the leaves change or pumpkins grow quicker. But I can make my home smell like fall. And you can too!
I recently tried a recipe I found on Pinterest and compared it to another I’ve done before to see which was best and I have to say they both work pretty good. The Pinterest recipe is great for long term use to add a light scent to your home and the other is great if you’re having people over and need a quick scent boost. While I used ingredients that make me think of fall, you could do any scent you want.

The Pinterest recipe makes 4-8oz jars of air freshener gel. This was super simple and took less than 10 minutes to do!

Air Freshener Gel

  • 4- 8oz mason jars, clean and ready to go
  • 4 packets of plain, unflavored gelatin
  • 2 cups water
  • 2 tbsp sea salt (table salt will make it look cloudy)
  • Liquid food coloring (optional)
  • 20-30 drops essential oil

  1. Pour 1/4 cup cold water in measuring cup and sprinkle all 4 packets of gelatin in to water to soften, about 5 minutes (Don't panic if it turns to gel!)
  2. While that's softening bring 3/4 cup of water to boil in small saucepan
  3. Remove from heat and gently stir in salt (prevents mold), food coloring (if using) and essential oils
  4. Pour the softened gelatin into the hot water and stir until combined. Then gently stir in 1 cup of cold water. If stirred vigorously it will foam up and create a cloudy gel!
  5. Place your jars on a towel and pour a quarter of the mixture into each jar. Let it set up overnight before placing  the lids on them. Drill a few small holes into each lid so the scent will be released into the area you place them (this should last about a month), if you are not going to use a jar right away,  don't drill holes in the lid and it will be good for 3 months in a cool, dark place.

Here is the original recipe to reference!

Stove Top Air Freshener

  • Saucepan or small kettle
  • Water
  • Orange slices, cinnamon sticks, whole or ground clove (Fall scents, more suggestions listed below)

  1. Slice the oranges (1-2) and place in the kettle
  2. Add your cinnamon sticks and clove
  3. Fill 3/4 of the kettle with water and bring to a boil on your stove top. Once boiling, turn off and let sit. Your house should smell like fall now!

Both of these recipes are very quick and simple and can be used together or separate. Here are some more scent options for both recipes:
