You can use apple cider vinegar in place of alcohol (especially if you have children), but it won’t be as strong.
2 cups chopped, dried, and cleaned echinacea root
1 quart 80 proof vodka, gin, or brandy (your preference)
Place echinacea root in a 1quart wide-mouth canning jar. Add enough alcohol (or vinegar) to cover the herb by 2-3 inches. Cover with tight-fitting kid and place on the kitchen counter. Let sit for 3-4 weeks, shaking daily. Strain and rebottle the liquid for use.
To use: For acute situations, take 1/4-1/2 teaspoon every hour or as often as needed. For chronic inflammation and infection, use 1/2 teaspoon 3x daily for 2 weeks. Dilute the tincture in warm water, tea or juice. Discontinue for 1 week (a cycle of rest), and repeat the cycle as necessary.
