Natural Cleaning Pt. 7

Natural Cleaning Pt. 7

It's that time of year again when bugs start finding their way into your home and ants seem to be more persistent than most. Around the garbage, on the counter and near our pets food dishes seems to be the areas I mostly see these little bugs. I am constantly killing them and have had a hard time getting rid of them. I have found a few things that have helped a lot, I am still working on the right combination to completely rid my home of them but I have noticed a lot less sense I started doing these few things.

  1. In the fall I noticed that we get crickets and spiders in the basement, I am not a fan of both. I wouldn't mind the crickets so much but my cat hunts them and brings them upstairs and they are not always dead. So i started sprinkling diatomacious earth around our home and within a week I noticed no more spiders or crickets. So I thought maybe this would also work for ants. While it has not completely kept them from coming into my home, I have noticed a lot less! If you would like to learn more about diatomacious earth, head over to How I Get Rid Of and check out their article!

  2. Ant spray! I have two recipes to try to help keep ants out of your home. One recipe contains most things that you should already have in your home and the other has similar ingredients plus peppermint EO. I believe that is your secret weapon. Most insects and critters dislike peppermint EO. So far I have tried the one without the peppermint because I wanted to see if I noticed an improvement when I switched to the recipe with peppermint in it.

  • 2 cups apple cider vinegar
  • 2 tbsp dish soap
  • 2 tbsp baking soda
  • Fill the rest with water in a spray bottle

I chose this recipe first because I have cats and all these ingredients should be okay if they come in contact with it, peppermint oil would not be good for your cats to accidentally lick! I didn't spray around my entire house but instead just around the outside of my kitchen since this is where I am having the issue. I sprayed the door jam and around the garbage and the window above the counter where I have found ants before. Like I said, I am still finding an ant here or there but this has made a big difference. I have noticed if I spray an ant it kills on contact too. I do believe I will notice even more of a difference with the peppermint oil because even once that dries the peppermint scent will be left and I think an ant would try to avoid walking through it.

  • 1/4 cup water
  • 1/4 cup vinegar
  • 1 tbsp dish soap
  • 15 drops peppermint EO

Mix together in a spray bottle and spray areas you think ants may be coming in. I would also spray around garbage cans but I would NOT spray around pets food dishes. Hopefully if you can keep the ants from coming in, you won't have to worry about them getting into your pets food. It still took a little bit before I noticed no ants at all but I do believe the peppermint oil made a difference.

I hope this helps you rid your house of pests the natural way!
